Scientists in the US have been for many years working on ways to treat age-related macular degeneration, which is the main cause of blidness among elderly people. Recently they discovered that a chemical called PPADS can inhibit the formation of the pores that can lead to the death of the cells. The same chemical also prevented blood vessels clots to damage the eye.
That was only an initial study conducted on mice, but if it proves to be effective and safe, there is a chance of avoiding complicated procedures, and injections in the future. As Dr Rajendra Kumar-Singh, said: “An ideal therapy would be one that can be self-administered by patients daily.”
